Q&A: Decorative Cabinet Door Glass & Mirror
What types of decorative glass can I get for my cabinet doors?
Quite a few. We carry seeded, pebbled, swirled, rippled, textured, antiqued, floral, and obscure or frosted patterns, plus laminated and wired glass. If you're after a vintage look, seeded and antiqued are popular picks, while frosted and textured patterns are great when you want to hide what's inside the cabinet.
How do I request a quote for cabinet door glass?
Download the Decorative Glass Specification Sheet from the category page, fill it out, and email it to allglass@wgsonline.com. Include your shipping address, the glass type, and how many pieces you need, and we'll get pricing back to you.
Can I see a sample before I order?
Yes, and we recommend it. Textured glass looks different in person than on a screen. We offer 4" x 4" samples of every pattern for $3.50 each plus shipping, and other sample sizes are available if you ask.
What thickness should I choose for a cabinet door insert?
Most cabinet inserts use 1/8" glass, which is light and fits the standard rabbet in most wood doors. If your door has a deeper channel or you want a sturdier feel, 5/32" or 3/16" are good options. Measure the depth of the recess before you decide.
How do I measure the opening for a glass insert?
Measure the width and height of the rabbet (the recessed lip the glass sits in), not the visible opening from the front. Take readings in a couple of spots, use the smallest number, and subtract about 1/8" so the glass drops in without binding.
Can I use a mirror instead of glass in my cabinet doors?
Absolutely. Mirror inserts, including antiqued mirror, are a nice way to brighten a room and make a space feel bigger. Just keep in mind that mirror adds a bit of weight, so check that your hinges can handle it on larger doors.
Is cabinet door glass tempered?
Not always, and it depends on the pattern and your project. Many decorative patterns are sold annealed. If your cabinet is in a spot where local code calls for safety glass, or you just want extra peace of mind, ask us about tempered or laminated options when you request your quote.
Can I order low-iron glass for display cabinets or shelves?
Yes. Low-iron glass removes the green tint you see on the edges of standard clear glass, so it's great for display cases and anywhere color accuracy matters. We have it in 1/4" laminated, 1/4" annealed, and 3/8" for shelving.
What thickness do you recommend for glass shelves?
For shelving, 3/8" is a solid choice because it resists sagging and handles weight well. Thinner glass can work for short spans and light items, but for bookshelves or longer runs, go thicker. Tell us the span and what you plan to put on it, and we'll help you choose.
What's the difference between seeded glass and pebbled glass?
Seeded glass has small air bubbles trapped inside, which gives it an old-world, hand-blown look while staying fairly see-through. Pebbled glass has a bumpy surface texture that blurs what's behind it more. Pick seeded for charm, pebbled if you want more privacy.
Which patterns give the most privacy?
Obscure and frosted glass hide the most, followed by heavy textures like pebbled and rippled. Seeded glass and light textures still let you see shapes and colors through them. A few samples side by side make this choice a lot easier.
Are your full sheets a standard size?
Sheet sizes vary by pattern, running from about 24" x 48" up to 72" x 84". If you're cutting your own inserts, check the size listed on the product so you can plan your cuts and cut down on waste.
Can you cut the glass to my exact size?
Yes, custom sizes are available. Put your finished dimensions on the specification sheet and we'll quote the glass cut to size, so it shows up ready to install.
How do I install a glass insert in a wood cabinet door?
Set the glass into the rabbet from the back, then hold it in place with glazing points, retainer clips, or a thin bead of silicone. Many installers use small rubber bumpers or a soft glazing bead so the glass doesn't rattle when the door closes.
Will textured glass be hard to clean?
A little more than flat glass, but it's easy to manage. Use a soft cloth or a soft-bristle brush with mild glass cleaner to get into the texture. Skip abrasive pads, since they can dull the finish.
Can I use decorative glass in bathroom or laundry room cabinets?
Yes. Glass holds up well to humidity, which makes it a good fit for bathrooms and laundry rooms. If you're going with a mirrored insert in a damp space, make sure the edges are sealed or finished so moisture doesn't creep behind the silvering over time.
Do you sell to homeowners or only to contractors?
Both. We've supplied the glass trade in Southern California since 1983, but homeowners and DIYers are welcome to order too, and we're happy to walk you through the options.
Can I match glass I already have in other cabinets?
Often, yes. Sending us a photo helps, but a small piece of the existing glass is even better. Patterns can differ a bit between manufacturers, so we'll let you know if we have a close match or suggest the next best option.
Is wired glass a good choice for cabinets?
Wired glass has a distinct, industrial look that works well in lofts, workshops, and modern kitchens. Just know it's mostly chosen for style in cabinet use, so if you need true safety glass, ask us about laminated or tempered options instead.
Who can I talk to if I'm not sure which glass to pick?
Give us a call at 800-505-6311 or email allglass@wgsonline.com. Tell us about the space, the look you want, and how much privacy you need, and we'll point you to a few patterns worth sampling.
