What's the difference between an angle, a channel, and a flat bar?

An angle is an L-shaped piece that wraps an outside or inside corner. A channel has a slot that holds the edge of glass or a mirror, like a J or U shape. A flat bar is a plain, flat strip used to cover seams and gaps or to give an edge a clean finish.

What is J channel used for?
Most people use J channel to support the bottom (and sometimes the top) edge of a wall mirror. The mirror's weight sits in the channel while the adhesive cures and after. It also works nicely as a trim or edge molding.

Should I get deep J channel or shallow J channel?
Shallow J channel sits low and shows less metal, so it's the usual choice for supporting the bottom edge of a mirror. Deep J channel has a taller front lip, which makes it a better fit for the top edge, where the mirror needs room to be lifted up into the channel and then lowered into the bottom one.

What mirror thickness does your J channel fit?
Most of our J channel is made for 1/4" mirror, the most common thickness for wall mirrors. We also carry sizes for 1/8" mirror. Match the channel to your mirror's thickness so it sits snug without forcing it.

When would I use U channel instead of J channel?
U channel has equal-height sides, so it grips both faces of the glass. That makes it a good fit for holding a fixed glass panel, partitions, or shelving edges. We carry U channel for 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" glass.

What finishes are available?
Our aluminum pieces come in several anodized finishes, including black, satin or clear, chrome (bright silver), and bronze, plus bright white powder coat on some angles. Vinyl pieces come in white. Picking a finish that matches your frames or hardware ties the whole job together.

What's the difference between anodized and powder coat finishes?
Anodizing is a treatment that builds a hard protective layer into the aluminum itself, so it won't peel and it keeps a metallic look. Powder coat is a baked-on paint layer that gives you a solid, even color like bright white. Both hold up well indoors.

How long are the pieces?
Most aluminum pieces come in 95" lengths, and many angles also come in a shorter 47-7/8" length, which is easier to ship and handle for small jobs. Vinyl flat bar comes in a varity of lengths, including 12-feet.

Can I get a custom length?

How do I cut aluminum angle or flat bar myself?
A miter saw with a fine-tooth, non-ferrous blade gives the cleanest cuts. A hacksaw works for a few pieces. Clamp the piece down, cut slowly, then file off any burrs. For corners, cut 45-degree miters so the pieces meet neatly.

Which angle size should I choose?
Think about how much edge you need to cover and how visible it will be. A 3/4" x 3/4" angle is a subtle trim for most finished edges. A 1" or 1-1/2" leg covers bigger gaps and gives a bolder look. Measure the gap or edge before you choose.

What does the thickness number mean, like 3/64" or 1/16"?
That's the wall thickness of the metal. Thinner stock like 3/64" is light and easy to cut, which is great for decorative trim. Thicker stock like 1/16" or 1/8" feels sturdier and resists dents, so it's better for edges that get bumped.

Why use aluminum for trim?
Aluminum resists corrosion, so it holds up in kitchens, bathrooms, and storefronts. It's also strong for its weight, which makes it easy to handle and install. And it takes a clean anodized finish that looks sharp for years.

What is vinyl flat bar used for?
Vinyl flat bar is mostly used as interior trim around replacement vinyl windows. It covers the gap between the new window and the wall so the job looks finished. Our white vinyl bar is UV protected, so it won't yellow over time.

Do any of these come with adhesive already on them?
Yes. Several of our vinyl and aluminum flat bars come with 2-way tape already on the back. You just clean the surface, peel the liner, and press it in place. It saves time and skips the mess of glue.

How do I get the pre-taped trim to stick well?
Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely. Dust and oil are the main reasons tape lets go. Dry-fit the piece first, then press it firmly along its full length once you set it. Try to install in mild temperatures, since cold surfaces don't bond as well.

Where is aluminum flat bar typically used?
Installers use it as trim molding on storefronts and replacement windows, and as a face cover to hide seams, screw heads, or uneven edges. It's a quick way to give a job a clean, finished edge.

What is price tag molding?
It's an aluminum strip that mounts along the front edge of a shelf and holds standard 1-1/4" price tags. It's common in stores and warehouses, and it doubles as a clean edge trim for the shelf.

How do I install J channel for a mirror?
Mount the channel level on the wall with screws into studs or proper anchors. Set the mirror into the bottom channel, then tip it back against the wall with mirror-safe adhesive. If you're using a top channel too, slide the mirror up into it first, then lower it into the bottom one.
