FAQ: Screen Parts & Supplies

What screen parts and supplies do you carry?

We carry screen frames, corners, mesh, spline, pull tabs, springs, and screen door rollers and hardware, plus the tools you need to put them together.

How do I rescreen a window screen?

Remove the old spline and mesh, lay new mesh over the frame, and press the spline back into the groove with a spline roller. Keep the mesh snug but not too tight so the frame doesn't bow. Trim off the extra mesh with a utility knife.

What size spline do I need?

Spline size depends on the width of the groove in your frame and the thickness of your mesh. The easiest way is to measure the old spline's diameter or bring a piece in. If it's too small, it won't hold; too big, and it won't fit.

What types of screen mesh are there?

Fiberglass mesh is the most common and easy to work with. Aluminum is stronger and holds up to wear. There are also pet-resistant, solar-blocking, and fine-mesh options for small insects.

Which mesh is best if I have pets?

Pet-resistant mesh is thicker and tougher than standard fiberglass, so it holds up better to claws and paws. It costs a bit more, but it lasts much longer in homes with pets.

Can I build my own screen frames?

Yes. You cut the frame material to size, connect it with corners, then install the mesh and spline. It's a great option when you need a custom size or you're replacing a damaged frame.

How do I measure for a new window screen?

Measure the opening where the screen sits, including any channel or track it fits into. Measure the width and height in a couple of spots, and note how the screen attaches, such as with springs, tabs, or clips.

What are screen springs and pull tabs for?

Springs press the screen into its channel so it stays in place, and pull tabs give you something to grab when you want to remove the screen. Replacing missing ones is a quick fix for loose screens.

My screen door won't slide smoothly. What should I check?

Look at the rollers and the track. Clean the track, then check that the rollers spin freely. Most screen doors have adjustment screws to raise or lower the rollers so the door sits right.

How do I replace screen door rollers?

Take the door off the track, remove the old rollers, and install new ones of the same size and style. Adjust the height until the door slides smoothly and lines up with the frame.

What's the best way to keep my screen door from coming off the track?

Adjust the rollers so the door sits firmly on the bottom track, and make sure the top guides are in place. Worn rollers are the most common cause, so replace them if they're wobbly or flat.

How do I fix a small hole in a screen?

For tiny holes, a screen repair patch or a dab of clear adhesive works well. For bigger tears, it's usually easier to replace the whole mesh panel for a clean look.

Do I need special tools for screen repair?

A spline roller is the one must-have. A utility knife and a flat work surface help too. If you're building frames, a small saw or cutter for the frame material makes clean cuts.

What screen frame colors are available?

Common colors include white, bronze, gray, and mill finish. Matching your window frame color gives the most finished look.

Can I get solar screen mesh?

Yes. Solar screen blocks a good portion of the sun's heat and glare while still letting air through. It's a popular choice for sunny windows and patios, and it can help keep rooms cooler.

How tight should the mesh be when I install it?

Snug, but not so tight that it bows the frame inward. Clamp the frame down or weigh down the sides while you work so it stays straight.

Can you make screens for me?

Give us a call at 800-505-6311 and tell us what you need. Have your measurements and the screen type ready so we can talk through your options.

How long does screen mesh last?

Fiberglass mesh often lasts many years, but sun, pets, and weather can shorten that. Aluminum mesh lasts longer but can dent. If your screen is brittle or sagging, it's time for new mesh.

How do I clean my screens?

Remove the screens, rinse with a hose, and gently scrub with a soft brush and mild soap. Let them dry fully before putting them back to avoid mildew.

What should I send you if I need help finding a screen part?

A photo of the part, a few measurements, and the type of window or door it goes on. That usually gives us enough to point you in the right direction.
